Sports Team Coaches Hazing and Bullying Prevention and Intervention Training

The Problem:

School teams are experiencing significant incidents of hazing, bullying and harassment – on the practice field, in the locker room, and during transportation to and from games.

Far too often the coaches, many of whom underwent hazing or bullying when they were young, turn a blind eye while believing that “it’s just what kids do” or “it’s a necessary rite of passage that will toughen them up or help them become part of the team.” When a hazing incident does come to their attention, it’s often too late for the damage to student athletes and athletic programs to be undone, but it’s never too late to put a stop to future occurrences. Some reasons that athletic program staff fail to prevent incidents include:

  • their primary focus being on team performance and winning;
  • not personally witnessing the incidents;
  • insufficient relational connection with students; and
  • lack of intervention confidence and competence.

The Solution:

Community Matters’ Sports Team Coaches Hazing and Bullying Prevention and Intervention Training supports coaches, athletic directors, parents and other student team supervisors in understanding how the creation of a positive climate with their student-athletes can help them develop young people of high character, with admirable values that go well beyond winning. They will also be able to do their coaching job more effectively with fewer discipline issues.

Outcomes and Benefits:

  • Developing greater awareness and ability to recognize bullying, hazing and other forms of mistreatment;
  • Increasing skills to prevent, de-escalate and stop negative team and individual behaviors;
  • Understanding positive relationship-building as a basis for a respectful team culture and experience;
  • Gaining greater self-awareness and self-management of personal triggers and reactions;
  • Developing a code of conduct that increases behavioral accountability;
  • Building a team with greater character, sportsmanship, respect and success.

This training is designed for elementary, middle and high school coaches, athletic directors, parents and other student team supervisors.
